Getting Started
Monochrome allows you to organize your Clips as a Playlist. A Clip is any valid QuickTime file stored on your hard drive or accessible via the internet (using a valid URL). Clips can contain any kind of media: video, music, Flash animation, etc.
Playlists are the containers for Clips. Playlists can be empty, but generally contain one or more Clips in a variety of different media types. Playlists are stored in Monochrome (".Monochrome") documents. When using Monochrome, you may have one or more documents open at time. You may also cutnpaste or dragndrop Clips between Playlists.
A Digital Portfolio is a QuickTime movie that contains references to one or more "sub movies" (the Clips from your Playlist). When viewed in the QuickTime Player, the manifest of sub-moives is available for the user, who may directly select any of the movies to play at any time.
Digital Portfolios come in two flavors: Self-Contained and Referenced.
- Self-Contained Portfolios embed the media from each Clip in the selected Playlist. This creates highly-portable Digital Portfolio movie, but also results in a files of a larger size.
- Referenced Portfolios embed a link to the Clips in your Playlist, not the media itself. Subsequently, Referenced Digital Portfolio Movies are generally quite small (only a few dozen kilobytes), regardless of the size of the original Clips.
